SOS – Shagarab Refugee Camp
Press Release – May 2013
DEMONSTRATION IN GENEVA ON THE17th OF JUNE 2013
SOS Shagarab Group is calling for a peaceful demonstration
Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Shagarab Refugee Camp must be granted Security and Protection NOW!
Distressed voices from our brothers and sisters in Shagarab Camp (Eastern Sudan) reach us expressing fear of abduction and torture by well-organized human traffickers. In the recent months the fate of refugees from Shagarab who often end up in torture camps in the Sinai desert of Egypt has come to the attention of the international community with detailed reports by UNHCR, international news agencies and human rights groups such as Amnesty International. People are abducted while trying to go about their daily lives in already very harsh conditions. Since the vast majority of people within Shagarab Camp are refugees and asylum seekers who now have become easily identifiable resource for the traffickers, they are in most urgent need of international protection.
We are therefore demanding:
UNHCR and the International community to put pressure on the Government of Sudan to ensure the safety and security of asylum seekers within its borders;
To reconsider the general conditions of the reception/transit area in the Camp as it exists today and an immediate and tangible security improvement inside and around it, so as to avoid further kidnappings;
To find imminent durable solutions for these refugees, such as resettlement opportunities to safe countries, giving priority to the most vulnerable;
To protect those asylum seekers who are currently being persecuted by the Sudanese authorities for making their voices heard and standing up for their rights and the rights of the other asylum seekers in Shagarab Camp.
